In light of the recent political and social problems our world is facing such as the governmental response to the pandemic, the Black Lives Matter movement and the calamities in Afghanistan, we decided to launch an Instagram account called @ourwrittenvoice that would use art and poetry to create awareness of these geopolitical uncertainties and risks.
Our initial post was in memory of the death of George Floyd. We created a piece of artwork to capture the horror and controversy surrounding the way in which he was the victim of police brutality.
Additionally, we wrote two poems, each which caught the essence of the true meaning of police brutality and providing an insight into the history of the Black Lives Matter movement and its significance in our world today.
In alignment with the #JusticeForFloyd movement on social media, we created a thread of expression where many wrote “Please I can’t breathe” on their hands and we got many members of our school community as well as family and friends involved with this.
The project we are currently working on follows a similar format to our initial post. However, we are going to focus on the current Afghanistan conflict and hopefully raise awareness of the severity and catastrophic nature of this political struggle.
