I was thrilled when our NLCS Model United Nations director announced the trip to Singapore, it gave me exposure to different styles of the conference, and helped me socialize with people from all across the world. The experiences I gained from THIMUN made me hungrier for achievement in MUN on a global scale, as well as a taste of Singaporean culture and traditions. We had so much fun, dancing in the rain with our formal clothes, dissecting topical issues regarding human rights and nuclear powers, riding rollercoasters and eating foods we had never even heard of. I was also lucky enough to celebrate my 16th birthday on the trip, my NLCS family surprising me with lots of cakes and surprises throughout, making it incredibly special. I strongly urge every student to seek out experiences similar to THIMUN, it was truly one of the most magical trips I have had the pleasure of attending.
We were accompanied on the trip by Mr. May, Ms. Shah and our MUN Coordinator Mrs. Tayfour. We flew in at nighttime and got to experience the vibrance of the city, neon lights illuminating the streets, however, one of the things that struck us was the greenery. The roads were lined in green trees, jarring in comparison to the sand-dunes we had left behind in Dubai. We landed, and managed to find a restaurant we could experience some local cuisine in - which immediately birthed a competition… who could cook the best noodles in the hidden water bath in the middle of the table? The next day, we woke up early, full of excitement to visit the rides at Universal Studios!
After the thrill at the theme park, we returned back to the hotel to work on our position papers before the conference. We each prepared three or more position papers, outlining our designated countries' position on the issues we would be discussing in our respective committees. The nervousness was palpable, however, it quickly turned into excitement as the night went on. The conference was everything we could have hoped. Surrounded by individuals interested in political debate and often engaging in intellectual discussion definitely fuelled our desire to enter more MUN conferences and by the end of the trip we were ready to return back to Dubai, and share the amazing things we learned with the younger members of our MUN student-run club.
